I came across an infographic today that claims to nail down the “nuts and bolts of a perfect Facebook post”. At the bottom, it admits there is no such thing as a totally “perfect” Facebook post, but using a variety of strategies and formulas can improve your overall presence on this popular social media platform. Here are a few that stand out to me (and that I can support from personal experience):
- Keep writing. You could fit 428½ Tweets into a Facebook post. That doesn’t necessarily mean you should try, but you definitely aren’t restricted to the stringent length imposed by Twitter when posting on Facebook. In fact, posts on Facebook that have at least 80 words tend to garner twice as much engagement than shorter posts, so don’t be afraid to bring out your inner writer!
- Use lots of pictures. Using images in your Facebook posts makes them much more popular. Even if you’re not Ansel Adams, whip out your camera and start documenting life around the office – your fans will love to see that they are dealing with real people behind the scenes at your company. And if you don’t have a good photo to go with that latest blog post, stock photography websites like Thinkstock or iStock can go a long way—just don’t overuse them. Unique pics are almost always better.
- Punctuation matters. As a professional writer and editor, I can definitely vouch for that! But this isn’t just talking about knowing when to use a comma and when to use a semicolon in your blog post—it’s important to know how and when to use certain types of punctuation specifically for a social media purpose. Posts with hashtags, exclamation points, and questions are especially popular on Facebook. Don’t overuse or use them incorrectly (#please #don’t #hashtag #every #single #word or SHOUT IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE YOU’RE SO EXCITED ABOUT YOUR LABOR DAY SALE!!!!!!!!!), but experiment around and see what works best.
Does anything in the infographic surprise you? Are there any other tricks you’ve used to succeed on Facebook?
